When surveying the retail strips in Melbourne and Sydney, we asked about the impact of Amazon. Interesting many businesses did not share retailers sentiment about Amazon, actually in Sydney 38% of the respondents didn’t even have an online presence. There was an overwhelming feeling, their customers came to retail strips for the outdoor shopping experience, the community feeling and 47% had been operating in the strip for over 10 years and had a regular customer base.
Amazon competes in dozens of international markets, as do many on-line retailers, yet the 'Amazon Effect' is far greater in the USA than anywhere else. And there's a good reason — America is vastly over-served when it comes to traditional retail.
